Last seen at home, she was reported missing by her mother, but conflicting accounts suggest she may have disappeared earlier, with her grandmother claiming no contact since June. Initially thought to be a runaway, a Silver Alert wasn’t issued until September 5, delaying the search. The FBI and Gary Police conducted a search on October 5, but no updates have followed. Ja’Niyah’s family history raises further questions, as past ties to organized crime and alleged child services involvement have surfaced. The case has attracted public attention, with advocacy from Missing Lost & Trafficked and USPA’s involvement. Volunteers, however, report facing resistance, including encounters with alleged gang members. USPA has offered a reward and encourages the public to come forward with any information.

Missing Teen Ja’Niyah McMichael: Family and FBI Intensify Search

GARY, IN – Ja’Niyah McMichael (13, Female) was reported missing by her mother, Jasmine McMichael. According to official reports, Ja’Niyah was last seen on the evening of August 11, 2024 at their home located in the 1300 block of Malcolm X Drive, Gary, IN. She was last seen wearing black pajamas, a black hooded sweatshirt, and black and red shoes. She is approximately 5’2” and 100 lbs. Ja’Niyah was due to start the new school year the day after she was reported missing.
Silver Alert Delayed, Initially Classified as Runaway
A Silver Alert was not immediately issued in connection with Ja’Niyah’s disappearance. Ja’Niyah was initially believed to be a runaway, and according to local media coverage, that was the reason for the almost three-week delay in the statewide alert being approved. The Silver Alert for Ja’Niyah was ultimately issued on September 5, 2024, when Gary Police requested the assistance of the Indiana State Police.

FBI Executes Search at Family Home on October 5
On October 5, 2024, the FBI and Gary Police executed a search warrant on Jasmine McMichael’s residence where Ja’Niyah was last seen. An FBI Indianapolis spokesperson said the search was conducted by the “Gang Response Investigative Team,” a specialized task force in northwest Indiana. Since then, authorities have not provided any additional updates on Ja’Niyah’s case

Media Advocacy Draws Public Attention to Ja’Niyah’s Case
Ja’Niyah’s disappearance gained the attention of Missing Lost & Trafficked, a media outlet that provides awareness, advocacy, and support for missing persons. Missing Lost & Trafficked has a large audience with nearly 100,000 followers on multiple platforms. Its founder, Pebbles Wilson, has been personally following Ja’Niyah’s case and has dedicated a tremendous amount of time investigating.
Estranged Father Interviewed; Reports of Past Abuse Surface
Through her research, Wilson was able to locate Ja’Niyah’s estranged biological father who goes by the Facebook moniker “Wooda Rasta Rogers.” In his interview with Missing Lost & Trafficked, Rogers said that he was never involved in Ja’Niyah’s life, but he consistently paid Jasmine McMichael child support.
Rogers claimed that in February of 2024, officials from Indiana Department of Child Services contacted him to report that Ja’Niyah had been raped and that they were conducting an investigation into her living conditions.

“I want a name of someone who saw Ja’Niyah during school vacation this past summer,” said Brian Fitzgibbons, lead missing persons investigator for USPA Nationwide Security, “someone aside from her mother.”
Family Disagrees on Disappearance Date; Summer Contact Lacking
There is also serious division amongst Ja’Niyah’s family as to the date of her disappearance. Her mother, Jasmine McMichael, reported Ja’Niyah missing on August 11, 2024. Ja’Niyah’s maternal grandmother, Dalia Guerrero, claims that none of Ja’Niyah’s extended family has heard from her since the second week of June, 2024. This time frame would coincide with the end of the 2023-24 school year.

Extended Family Raises Concerns Over Ja’Niyah’s Whereabouts
According to Wilson, the extended family says that throughout the summer, they repeatedly asked Jasmine McMichael where Ja’Niyah was, and McMichael dodged the questions. The family claims to have previously had regular phone and video calls with Ja’Niyah, so not hearing from her for weeks was a dramatic departure from routine.
USPA Founder Calls Family’s Silence a Cause for Concern
USPA’s founder, Michael Evans, asserted, “the fact that Ja’Niyah’s extended family is publicly claiming to have heard nothing from her since the beginning of June is a cause for grave concern, particularly given that her mother’s residence had a search warrant executed on it, and there’s an alleged DCS investigation ongoing.”

Volunteers Report Dangerous Resistance in Search Efforts
Other volunteers say that they have met with dangerous resistance in their search for Ja’Niyah. According to Missing Lost & Trafficked, a pair of women attempted to search some abandoned properties which are within one-hundred yards from where Ja’Niyah lived and was last seen. While conducting their search and publishing live video on Facebook, the group says they encountered who they claimed to be gang members guarding the abandoned properties and that “warning shots” were fired into the air as they approached.
Historical Link to Organized Crime Raises Concerns
The speculation of a link between Ja’Niyah’s disappearance and organized crime is not entirely unfounded. In July 2015, the United States Attorney David Capp announced charges for “threat of force against a witness” against both Jasmine McMichael (Ja’Niyah’s mother) and Dalia Guerrero (her grandmother). They allegedly confronted a witness in relation to a murder case brought against Ja’Niyah’s uncle, Anton Lamont James of Hammond, IN. In November of 2018, Anton James—a member of the Latin Kings street gang—plead guilty to racketeering, conspiracy, and the murder of Martin S. Hurtado, Sr.

Lead Investigator Questions Summer Absence, Family Ties
“With any missing persons case, there are naturally a number of unanswered questions. Ja’Niyah’s disappearance brings a unique set of questions… the family’s connection with organized crime and the disagreement on the date Ja’Niyah was last seen or heard from is truly unsettling,” USPA’s lead missing persons investigator, Brian Fitzgibbons, expanded on these concerns. “Where was Ja’Niyah all summer? Why didn’t she call her grandmother or aunts? Where are her friends saying they saw her throughout the summer? Was she reported missing on the 11th of August only because she was expected to be seen in school the next day?”
Reward Offered as USPA Urges Public to Come Forward
“We are hoping to get more eyeballs on Ja’Niyah’s case,” Dan Manning said in a video call on Wednesday with USPA’s media team and partners. “Someone in Gary knows something, and we are hopeful that publishing a reward will help incentivize them to come forward.”
